Prints: Etchings: Early Years

Beginning in the fall of 1952, and throughout the spring of 1953, Touster produced a series of small etchings at Atelier 17, an art school and studio in New York City (1940-1955) that was influential in the teaching and promotion of printmaking. His colleague, Peter Grippe served as Atelier 17’s director at the time, and he may have influenced Touster to work at the studio. Eventually Touster acquired a small printing press of his own, and after he left Atelier 17, he continued to work on that press.

Most of the imagery for his etchings came directly from the paintings and drawings that he was working on at the time.
