Poem Illustrations: The Saul Poems
In the 1960's Irwin collaborated with his brother, the poet, Saul Touster, on a series of poems and drawings. The poems were printed on sheets of drawing paper, and Irwin's drawings surrounded the type with images that played off Saul’s poetry.
When two brothers have, each in his own art, arrived at common themes,
their work is not so much a collaboration as a natural product of
biography. Here, in this confluence of drawing and poems, the poem
retains the integrity of its printed form, the drawing its visual immediacy.
They are their own together.
